In his latest budget announcement, Governor Newsom urged the Legislature to pass two crucial housing bills authored by Assemblymember Buffy Wicks and Senator Scott Wiener. He described the current housing situation as a significant opportunity for reform, highlighting the detrimental effects of delays caused by environmental review requirements under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). Wicks' Assembly Bill 609 aims to streamline housing development approvals, while Wiener's Senate Bill 607 seeks to simplify permitting processes. Both bills aim to address California's housing crisis and support economic growth by reducing bureaucratic hurdles.
It's time to get serious about this issue, period, full stop. If you care about your kids, you care about getting this done.
These bills are critical permitting reform proposals, and I applaud Gov. Newsom for including them in his proposed budget.
