NYC student, 7, and family detained by ICE: 'Should be getting ready for school'

A 7-year-old girl and her family are detained by ICE, with the girl and her mother sent to Texas while her brother remains in New Jersey custody. Councilman Shekath Krishanan criticized the detention, emphasizing that a child should be preparing for school rather than facing such circumstances. This incident marks the first known arrest of a child under 18 in New York City by ICE. Previous instances of student detentions have raised concerns, leading New York City Public Schools to affirm their commitment to student safety and support.

It is disgusting that a child would be taken into ICE detention this way. She should be with her mom, getting ready for school in a couple of weeks. She should be buying school supplies.

This is the first known ICE arrest of a New York City child under 18. The detention isn't the first time ICE has detained a New York City public school student after they had been in the vicinity of the federal building.
