A report by Comptroller Brad Lander revealed the Open Streets program in New York City has shrunk notably over the last four years, especially in Manhattan. This largely volunteer-fueled initiative, aimed at enhancing outdoor space, is facing funding challenges which endanger its future. Lander stressed the need for more city resources to maintain and expand the program, underscoring the importance of public outdoor spaces post-pandemic. Despite a temporary rise in open street locations last year due to federal funding, the program's sustainability is in jeopardy without renewed financial support from the city.
"People realized we needed new places to be outside, unfortunately we have not... provided resources for that work to continue," Lander said at a press conference on Friday.
"Volunteer groups cannot sustain the work to successfully operate open streets without more resources, support, and clear guidelines from the city," Lander added.
