Rebecca Kaplan, Oakland's first openly LGBTQ councilmember, marked her last day on the city council this week after being elected in 2008. Kaplan's farewell was met with recognition of her lengthy service and expertise in financial matters. Councilmember Carroll Fife expressed that Oakland was losing a crucial resource. Kaplan temporarily held District 2 before Charlene Wang's inauguration. Her future plans remain uncertain, as she previously ran unsuccessfully for mayor and the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. Kaplan reflected on her rewarding experiences during the meeting, emphasizing her gratitude to her fellow councilmembers.
"I believe the city is losing a library with Councilmember Kaplan no longer being on this body," said Councilmember Carroll Fife, who sponsored a resolution the council approved on Tuesday recognizing Kaplan's service.
"This has been an amazing experience and incredible honor," Kaplan said. "It is a great pleasure to celebrate this time, and this period - thank you so much."
