Room to breathe': DOT, East Midtown leaders celebrate completion of Pershing Square Plaza renovations | amNewYork
Briefly

The recently unveiled Pershing Square Plaza in East Midtown underwent a significant renovation, featuring dining areas, outdoor seating, and the largest Citi Bike station in NYC. NYC Department of Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez highlighted the project's focus on expanding pedestrian space, marking completion after years of construction. The project, which cost $16.7 million, aims to modernize the infrastructure and create a more user-friendly environment. Local officials emphasize the importance of the plaza in enhancing public use and accessibility in a densely populated area like East Midtown.
What we are celebrating today is more than constructing a plaza, Rodriguez said. It is about reimagining how we use our street.
We are responsible for building the infrastructure not of 1975, but an infrastructure of 2075, Rodriguez said.
Manhattan City Council Member Keith Powers said the project is important in opening up more pedestrian space for New Yorkers.
The plaza cost the city $16.7 million, with much of the development's labor and cost going toward underground cabling and sewer lines.
