'Some type of oil spill' discovered in Staten Island pond; residents raise alarm about polluted area
Briefly

A suspected oil spill has been identified in a pond adjacent to Tottenville High School, posing serious risks to wildlife and raising concerns among residents and nature enthusiasts. The New York City Parks chief Tom Russo confirmed the presence of a red-colored substance and noted a strong chemical odor in the surrounding wooded areas. Cliff Hagen, an environmentalist, attributed the pollution to possible direct dumping of heating oil or diesel fuel, emphasizing that such incidents jeopardize local natural habitats designed to mitigate stormwater damage. Investigations by city and state agencies are anticipated.
"It seems that we have some type of oil spill," said Tom Russo, chief of operations for New York City Parks, who surveyed the damage at the pond on Monday morning.
"Unfortunately, these open areas are very close to where we live and somebody it seems has come here and dumped a large quantity of some sort of heating oil or diesel fuel in the pond," Hagen said.
