Student starts initiative to have American flag on Verrazzano to celebrate the United States 250th anniversary
Briefly

Alesio Bejleri, a college student, has initiated a plan to hoist a giant American flag on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge in honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary in 2026. He was inspired by discussions about past celebrations, including a similar flag displayed in 1976. This initiative also coincides with the 2026 FIFA World Cup finals at MetLife Stadium, expecting to attract global visibility. So far, the response to his proposal has been positive, with local council members actively supporting the request to the MTA for the installation.
I was talking to some old-timers about how they drove to California for the bicentennial, and they mentioned a boat parade and the flag on the Verrazano-Narrows which sparked my interest to look into this story.
During the 1976 Bicentennial celebration of America's founding, a large American flag was displayed across the suspension cables of the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge.
