New York City has introduced an updated interactive map detailing approximately 2,500 streets, parks, and other locations named after significant individuals. Managed by the Department of Records and Information Services, this tool provides users with biographies of honorees and the history of each street's renaming. Created with accessibility in mind, the map serves historians, researchers, and the public. City Councilmember Gale Brewer emphasized its role in honoring the past and educational purposes, particularly noting its inclusion of over 400 streets commemorating fallen first responders from 9/11.
Think of it as a Wikipedia for street names," said the City Councilmember who pushed for the creation of the tool.
The map is designed for all users-historians, researchers, students and anyone interested in the city's history and the individuals who have contributed to its development.
