Trespassing charge against New Jersey mayor will be dismissed, prosecutor says
Briefly

Newark Mayor Ras Baraka's misdemeanor trespassing charge at a federal immigration detention center will be dismissed, according to US attorney Alina Habba. The incident on May 9 was reflective of the tough immigration policies imposed by the Trump administration. Baraka, a candidate for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, was visiting the facility alongside other officials for an unannounced inspection. In contrast, US Rep. LaMonica McIver has been charged with assault for her conduct during the visit, which included interference with law enforcement.
"After extensive consideration, we have agreed to dismiss Mayor Baraka's misdemeanor charge of trespass for the sake of moving forward," Habba said in a statement.
"However, she said McIver assaulted, impeded, and interfered with law enforcement. That conduct cannot be overlooked," Habba said.
