Three teens from New York City have developed Kiriboard, an inventive cardboard packaging material that aims to replace toxic plastic in shipping. Inspired by Japanese kirigami, it features a lattice design allowing it to absorb impact and provide protection for items. After winning the Earth Prize, the trio plans to patent their creation and approach major retailers like Home Depot and Amazon for collaboration. Concerns about plastic and microplastics, which pose health risks, underpin their motivation to make plastic-free shipping a reality and raise awareness of environmental issues.
Kiriboard is cut into lattice-like shapes so that it can bend to fill the space between an item and the wall of its box.
I didn't realize it was as big of an issue as it was. Companies have made sustainable initiatives, but they haven't fully replaced plastic packaging.
