New York officials are contemplating penalties for Tesla after the company failed to meet its job creation commitments at a state-owned factory in Buffalo. The agreement stipulates 3,460 employees, but Tesla reported only 2,883 last year. State lawmakers, including Assemblymember Micah Lasher, argue that fines are necessary for the state's credibility regarding economic development subsidies. Governor Kathy Hochul has expressed concern over the situation amid attempts to renew Tesla's lease, which would significantly increase its rent from $1 to $2 million annually.
"They should be fined if they didn't meet the terms of their agreement, both because that's fair and because it's essential for the state of New York to have any credibility in negotiating and enforcing agreements around economic development subsidies," said Assemblymember Micah Lasher.
"I'm aware that there's more interest in changing that dynamic going forward in light of - Tesla," Hochul said. "I'm going to look at that. I truly want to look at that."
