The University of Green Bay has requested a waiver from the NCAA to allow its men's basketball team to participate in The Basketball Tournament (TBT), a summer tournament. This request argues that TBT serves as a suitable alternative to foreign tours allowed every four years, which are typically expensive and not NCAA-certified games. Coach Doug Gottlieb highlighted the inconsistency in NCAA rulings, while athletic director Josh Moon emphasized the need for opportunities for student-athletes, suggesting that any prize money should benefit a charity rather than be the main focus.
When you play overseas, these teams that go to France, Spain, Belgium, whatever, those aren't NCAA-sanctioned games. The NCAA's argument is, 'Hey, in summer competition, you can't play these games in the United States.' So, if I played this exact same game three hours north of here in Canada, it'd be OK. It doesn't make sense.
Let's not worry about the prize money right now, but that could go to a charity, just let us play. It's really about our team and trying to give them opportunities.
