Colts won't take risk, will sit Richardson for finale
Briefly

Anthony Richardson Sr. will not be the Indianapolis Colts' opening-day starter and will not play in the preseason finale at Cincinnati. Coach Shane Steichen said Richardson is the team's primary backup and that the Colts do not want to risk exposing him to injury in a game where core players will not play. The Colts named veteran Daniel Jones the starting quarterback in a move intended to be season-long. Steichen said Richardson, 23, will benefit from a background role and the opportunity to learn while third- and fourth-team players compete for 53-man roster spots.
"I think he's one play away from going into an actual game and don't want to take the risk there," Steichen said. "We got a lot of our [third team] and [fourth team] playing in this game. It's their last opportunity to go prove it to make a 53-man roster and that's where it's at."
"He's 23 years old," Steichen said. "He's still learning, still growing, and for the first time in his career, this is an opportunity for him to sit at the start of the season and learn in a different light and attack it the right way."
