"I've been doubted my whole life, so that's nothing new. I'm just going to keep working, and I'm going to keep being the person that I am. It'll all work out."
"It was a lot of colleges worrying about size and things like that instead of worrying about production on the field, which is understandable, but I was underrecruited out of high school," Ponds recalled. "Obviously, I fell in the right hands with coach Cignetti at JMU. I'm glad I made that decision."
D'Angelo Ponds measures 5-foot-9 and 173 pounds but possesses elite speed and strong coverage instincts. High school size concerns led to being underrecruited despite playing on state championship teams in South Florida. Ponds signed with James Madison under coach Curt Cignetti, produced interceptions, fumble recoveries and pass breakups as a freshman, and followed Cignetti to Indiana. He contributed three interceptions in 2024, including a touchdown, and won a national championship in Miami Gardens. Ponds is training in South Florida for the NFL scouting combine while pitching production and tenacity to offset scouts' concerns about his stature.
