The former Broncos and Raiders head coach came back to the Patriots ahead of the 2025 season, partnering with first-year New England head coach Mike Vrabel. McDaniels has previous experience alongside Vrabel, though it came two decades prior when the latter was still a Patriots linebacker."

Josh McDaniels returned to the Patriots for a third stint as offensive coordinator ahead of the 2025 season, partnering with first-year head coach Mike Vrabel. The Patriots' offense improved from consecutive 4-13 seasons to an 11-2 record, with much of the turnaround centered on quarterback Drake Maye and McDaniels' leadership. McDaniels and Vrabel share an Ohio background and are similar in age. McDaniels previously served as Patriots offensive coordinator from 2006–2008 and 2012–2021 and was fired by the Raiders in 2023. McDaniels described the Patriots' hiring process as well-communicated and said he interviewed like other candidates.
