"He never got a chance to do it as a quarterback. Despite being on seven teams in a six-year career as a backup, he appeared in only four games, attempted just 16 passes and never came close to making a start. Coaching turned out to be his path. And after eight years climbing the ranks as an assistant, he finally got his shot on Sunday as interim head coach of the Giants."
"Kafka even disclosed that if the Giants had managed to score a late touchdown that would have brought them within a point of the lead, he was intent on going for two and the win. "Staying aggressive, that's what will get us over the hump," Kafka said. "To me, as a former player, being around a lot of good play-callers and head coaches, you want to have an aggressive mentality on offense, defense and special teams. That's the messaging throughout.""
Mike Kafka waited his whole life to lead an NFL team but never started as a quarterback during a six-year backup career that included seven teams, four game appearances and 16 pass attempts. Coaching became his path and after eight years as an assistant he became the Giants' interim head coach. He focused on the game plan rather than savoring the debut and pursued aggressive decisions: starting Jameis Winston over Russell Wilson, attempting four fourth-down conversions, benching Abdul Carter for an opening-possession rules infraction, and throwing the red challenge flag early. He intended to go for two late to win if necessary, but the aggressive approach failed to secure a victory.
