NFL schedule release: Patriots-Seahawks Super Bowl rematch will kick off 2026 season
"The NFL season will be opening on a Wednesday for just the second time in league history. The opener will be Vrabel's first game since the reigning AP Coach of the Year missed the third day of this year's draft to seek counseling following the publication of photos of him and NFL reporter Dianna Russini at an Arizona resort. The photos led to Russini's resignation from The Athletic less than a week later."
The 2026 NFL season begins with a Super Bowl rematch as the Seattle Seahawks host the New England Patriots in Week 1. Seattle raised its championship banner on 9 September and enters after a 29-13 Super Bowl victory over New England that delivered the franchise’s second title. The matchup will be only the third time the same Super Bowl teams meet again in Week 1, with the previous instance occurring in 2016. The season opener is scheduled for a Wednesday for only the second time in league history. Mike Vrabel’s first game follows his absence from the third day of the draft while seeking counseling after photos involving Dianna Russini. The schedule also includes a record nine international games, with the 49ers playing the Rams in Melbourne, plus early Sunday night and Monday night games featuring the Cowboys-Giants and Broncos-Chiefs.
