"The 20-year-old had a whirlwind 2024-25, from his sophomore season at Boston College, a gold medal with the United States at the under-20 World Junior Championships, an NHL contract with the Washington Capitals, his first professional goal and the completion of Alex Ovechkin's chase of Wayne Gretzky's NHL goal-scoring record. By the time Washington's season ended in May, Leonard had played 61 games for three different teams - the Eagles, the United States and the Capitals - in the span of seven months."
"Leonard was back on the ice at Washington's practice facility in Ballston on Wednesday, joined by 29 other NHL rookies for a showcase put on by the NHLPA and Upper Deck, the NHL's trading card partner. After having a few months to relax and process all that had happened over the last year, Leonard said he's ready to ramp back up ahead of his first NHL training camp."
Ryan Leonard needed a quiet summer after a whirlwind 2024-25 that included a sophomore season at Boston College, a U-20 World Junior gold medal, an NHL contract with the Washington Capitals, his first professional goal and Alex Ovechkin's chase of Wayne Gretzky's goal record. By season's end Leonard had played 61 games for Boston College, the United States and the Capitals across seven months. He returned to Washington's practice facility for an NHLPA and Upper Deck rookie showcase, relaxed with friends and family for a few months, and prepared to ramp up for his first NHL training camp. Leonard scored one goal in his brief Capitals stint, an empty-netter that earned a handshake from Wayne Gretzky and coincided with Ovechkin's 893rd and 894th goals. Scoring consistently at the NHL level proved challenging for him.
