""Yeah, it sucks. I think I've played half a game in nine weeks, so it's not fun," Tanev told reporters following the Maple Leafs' 6-3 win over the Penguins. Definitely, I think the longest stretch in my career where I haven't played. So, it's definitely a lot of ups and downs, just try to grind through it and stay positive. Extremely happy to be back on the ice today.""
""I wasn't great in the first, obviously gave someone a Christmas present in front," Tanev joked. "Thankfully Joe [Woll] snagged it away. Those two plays in the first weren't ideal, but missing nine weeks, you think you know how the game is going to go and what's going to happen, and it comes a lot quicker than you think, especially missing so much time. So, I definitely think I got better as the game went on, but still lots to improve on, for sure.""
Chris Tanev returned to the Toronto Maple Leafs lineup after missing nearly all of November and three weeks of December due to an injury sustained Nov. 1. Tanev turned 36 recently and described the long absence as the longest stretch in his career without playing. His first 20 minutes back included being flat-footed on an odd-man rush and a giveaway that goaltender Joseph Woll corrected. Tanev said he steadily improved as the game went on and acknowledged there is still plenty to work on. Teammates noted that his presence had been missed.
