Backup goalie Dennis Hildeby stopped 33 of 36 shots and delivered several key saves but attempted a pass in overtime to spring a breakaway that failed, surrendering possession and enabling the deciding goal. Hildeby said he saw the chance for a Matthews breakaway, regretted his execution and noted he should have used both hands. Teammates praised his overall performance, calling him great, trustworthy and capable of a long NHL career, while John Tavares noted a late shift in momentum as the Leafs’ legs faded.
