Vinni Lettieri scores twice, Toronto Marlies withstand late comeback attempt to prevail in Iowa
""I didn't think we gave them much. It's a common theme, though. The problem is that when they do get something, it's us hand-delivering it. It's just got to stop."But there was a lot of good in our game. The power play is trending [in the right direction], and it's a big goal to score to get us going. There was a lot of good. I liked the win. I'm just a little disappointed in the way it ended." - John Gruden"
"In a low-event opening frame, neither team could establish much of an offensive presence. It was predictable from an Iowa team that had won just six home games, but the Marlies ' tentativeness was a mystery early on. Toronto finally drove some offense around the five-minute mark, generating chances for Alex Nylander, Luke Haymes, and Borya Valis. The opening goal arrived two minutes later off the back of a generous officiating decision."
The Toronto Marlies defeated the Iowa Wild 3-2 after nearly relinquishing a three-goal advantage late in regulation. An early power-play goal by Vinni Lettieri put Toronto ahead, and the team generated chances from Nylander, Haymes, Valis and others to build a 3-0 lead. Iowa struck the post and produced high-danger chances, while Artur Akhtyamov made a key save on a partial breakaway. The power play showed encouraging signs, but defensive lapses and hand-delivered goals allowed Iowa to mount a comeback and made the victory more precarious than necessary.
