Drake Maye experiences significantly more communication in his helmet this year compared to his rookie season in 2024. Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels provides extensive pre-snap guidance, fostering a deeper trust and understanding between the quarterback and the coaching staff. This operational relationship allows Maye to better anticipate defensive plays and engage with teammates. Josh McDaniels, a seasoned playcaller with prior experience managing notable quarterbacks, contrasts with former offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt, who offered limited helmet communication. Increased guidance helps in Maye's learning and adaptation to the offensive strategy.
"[Van Pelt] didn't talk in his helmet a lot. This year, Josh McDaniels talks to him as much as possible," McCourty said, highlighting increased communication.
"When Josh says something, [Maye] can anticipate what's going to happen. 'Hey, the safety's looking like he's going to come. Talk [to a teammate] about this,'" showcasing the operational relationship building.
"Considering that Maye was a rookie last season, it's a little surprising to hear that he wasn't receiving as much pre-snap guidance as possible," reflecting on the coaching changes.
"McDaniels, on the other hand, is one of the more seasoned playcallers in the league, having the ears of Tom Brady, Cam Newton, Derek Carr, Mac Jones."
