A 'Love Letter' to the City, Humans of New York Takes Over Grand Central
""New York is humanity itself. Every type of person is here-every ethnicity, every culture, every religion, every viewpoint. And somehow, despite the honking, the yelling, the shoving, we find a way to make it work," says Brandon Stanton."
"" Dear New York is a living, breathing immersive art installation staged in the one place where the entire city comes together-Grand Central. It is a love letter to the people of this city, and about the people of this city," Stanton added."
Humans of New York began in 2010 and now comprises roughly 10,000 portraits that capture people across all five boroughs. The project reached audiences through social media and several books and expanded into a large-scale public installation titled Dear New York at Grand Central Terminal. Fifty-foot portraits are projected in the Main Concourse while smaller photographs and quotes occupy advertising and transit spaces throughout the station, marking a rare ad-free takeover funded entirely by Stanton using earnings from the project. The installation includes work by 600 New York City public school students in Vanderbilt Hall and coincides with a new book titled Dear New York. The installation runs through October 19.
