Andrew Cuomo to run as independent in NYC Mayor's race, with a proposal
Briefly

Andrew Cuomo is set to announce his independent candidacy for mayor of New York City after losing the Democratic primary to Zohran Mamdani. He intends to propose that all candidates except Mamdani drop out of the race if they are not leading by mid-September. Mamdani won the Democratic primary by 12 percentage points. Following his loss, Cuomo acknowledged the result and indicated ongoing communication with constituents while expressing that the election outcome does not reflect the views of the majority of city residents.
Mamdani, who is also a member of the New York City Democratic Socialists of America, had a significant lead over Cuomo. Cuomo told his supporters at the time, "Tonight was not our night. Tonight was Assemblyman Mamdani's night."
Cuomo's spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, said, "We'll be continuing conversations with people from all across the city while determining next steps. Extremism, division and empty promises are not the answer to this city's problems, and while this was a look at what motivates a slice of our primary electorate, it does not represent the majority."
