Broadway aims to lure back reluctant Long Island theatergoers
"Like a lot of facets of the live-entertainment industry, we're continuing to see people enjoying streaming. People love the couch. People working from home. And I think that's a trend that was exacerbated, or heightened, since the pandemic,"
"It's a struggle of us against the couch suburbwide,"
Long Islanders' share of Broadway audiences fell to an estimated 4.3% in the 2023-24 season, the lowest rate in nearly 25 years. Overall Broadway attendance remains close to record levels despite the Long Island decline. Long Islanders represented 12% of audiences in the 2002-03 season. Suburban attendance overall is 12.8%, a low point since records have been kept. Factors cited for the decline include streaming services, higher costs, show times, and increased working-from-home patterns that reduce midweek trips into the city. New York City residents accounted for 20.5% of the audience; northern New Jersey, 5.9%; Westchester/Rockland, 2.6%.
