City officials ordered a pause and rollback of a plan to convert 70 Upper West Side curbside spots from free to three-hour metered parking, directing new street signs to be removed immediately. First Deputy Mayor Randy Mastro cited inadequate public notification and affordability concerns and required DOT to solicit more public input before reimplementation. The Smart Curbs initiative aimed to shift private car metered spots to side streets to create dedicated commercial delivery zones and reduce double parking, and DOT had conducted outreach and reduced the number of spots impacted. Less than 30 percent of UWS households own cars.
