Confirmed-Downtown Brooklyn Is One Big Illegal Parking Lot
"When we sent out our team into the neighborhood, I didn't anticipate that they would find nearly 500 illegally parked cars every single day. The scale and ubiquity of illegal parking across the neighborhood means that it's dangerous for parents with strollers, cyclists, people in wheelchairs, and it just shouldn't be this way,"
"People know they can park whenever they want and get away with it."
The Hell Gate quarterly event will occur tomorrow at Trans-Pecos at 7 p.m., featuring musical acts by New York City reporters and editors; tickets are on sale and limited free tickets are available for Believers and Supporters. Brooklyn City Councilmember Lincoln Restler's office conducted a four-week survey across roughly 60 blocks of Downtown Brooklyn during May and June, counting illegally parked vehicles. The survey found an average of 457 illegally parked vehicles on an average weekday. Forty-one percent of those vehicles displayed official city parking placards that are frequently misused to park on sidewalks and in no-standing zones. The pervasive illegal parking contributes to congestion and idling traffic and creates hazards for parents with strollers, cyclists, and people using wheelchairs.
