"Ideally, IBX will be fully automated when it opens so that it can operate the most robust service possible,"
"When you have a subway, the most important thing is reliability and frequency,"
"And the way you have the highest frequency is through automated operations."
"There are train lines in the world that run every 90 seconds,"
A review of more than 400 train systems found fewer than 6.25 percent operate with two on-board staff. The proposed Interborough Express (IBX) is a 14-mile, 19-stop light rail designed for about a 33-minute one-way ride, cutting many outer-borough commutes. Full automation is recommended to remove on-board staff, shorten train headways, and enable higher frequency and reliability. Automated operations can support very short headways—examples exist globally—and automation is presented as the mechanism to deliver faster, more frequent, and more reliable service on the IBX corridor.
