"Nicola is for all purposes, one of the most congenial, friendly individuals that you could ever meet,"
"If you were his friend, that was something very, very powerful. He'll do anything for his friends."
"He was always kind,"
"Always kidding around. He was like family to us."
Nicola Tanzi, 64, lived in Bay Ridge and worked as a security guard near the MetroTech station. Tanzi originally came from Bari, Italy, and settled in New York City about two decades ago. He regularly volunteered as an usher and attended Italian Mass at St. Dominic's and St. Athanasius-St. Dominic's Parish. Tanzi held a door open for 25-year-old David Mazariegos, who allegedly responded by brutally assaulting him and stomping on his head up to 15 times, killing him. Tanzi frequented a nearby flower shop, planned to retire next year, and was remembered as congenial and devoted to friends.
