"About halfway out onto the ice, the ice gave way, and I went into the water," the probie said. "It was definitely cold, but I mean all I really had thoughts of was getting to this kid, because regardless of if I was cold or not, he was even colder. I just knew I had to get out there. I had to secure him so he doesn't go underwater."
"Once I got to the patient I kind of talked to him, told him we're here, we got you, everything's going to be okay,"
"And then I got caught on the ice."
An 11-year-old boy fell through the ice on a pond in Springfield Park around 3 p.m. on Feb. 13. A 14-year-old attempted to help by sliding a rescue ladder but could not secure the boy and fell into shallower water. Several children ran to Engine Company 311 and Ladder Company 158 to alert firefighters. Probationary Firefighter Shaun McMahon, designated Rescue Swimmer 1, donned a cold-water suit and went onto the ice. The ice gave way under him, but he reached and calmed the boy. McMahon and his partner Tom Hanley broke ice to pull the boy to shore. Rescuers pulled the 14-year-old to safety; he did not require hospitalization. EMS transported the 11-year-old to Northwell Long Island Jewish Valley Stream, where he was listed in stable condition.
