"Marcus Hoad, the co-founder of the cargo bike company DutchX, was on hand at Thursday's launch of the city's first "Blue Highways" route - using the Hudson River to take small packages via ferry from the Brooklyn Marine Terminal to Pier 79 on Manhattan's west side, where the goods were loaded onto cargo bikes, not trucks, for final delivery. "In New York, we measure progress by what we finally stop doing," Hoad said."
New York launched its first 'Blue Highways' route moving small packages by ferry from the Brooklyn Marine Terminal to Pier 79, where goods are loaded onto cargo bikes for final delivery. Marcus Hoad of DutchX participated in the launch. Several hundred orders of cosmetics, fashion, lifestyle, and small household products were carried without trucks, avoiding congestion, pollution, and street safety impacts. NY Waterway reported the ferry trip took 25 minutes from Brooklyn. DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez characterized the approach as moving middle miles by water and last miles by sustainable modes, framing the initiative as part of long-term planning toward 2050.
