Holocaust survivor speaks at Brooklyn middle school after controversy involving principal
"In looking at his website materials, I also don't think that Sami's presentation is right for our public school setting, given his messages around Israel and Palestine. I'd love to explore other possible speakers."
"When I reviewed the speaker's website ... I found the slides to be political in nature."
"School buildings are not public forums for purposes of community or political expression."
"This is a groundbreaking decision, and the Holocaust survivors will not be denied,"
Arin Rusch, principal of Middle School 447, initially declined a parent's request to invite Holocaust survivor Sami Steigmann to present to students, citing concerns that his presentation was too political. The Department of Education intervened and extended an invitation to Steigmann, who spoke to students at the Brooklyn Heights school. Inna Vernikov attended and described watching Steigmann share his survival story as a powerful moment. Many students approached Steigmann afterward to express thanks and appreciation. Steigmann and Vernikov thanked the district superintendent for the invitation, and Vernikov stated that the principal should be held accountable for the initial rejection.
