"I've seen many, many videos and many tweets, and also heard from many New Yorkers, as well as experienced this myself, said Hizzoner, who himself is a cyclist."
"They are tired of biking across this bridge with anxiety as to what will happen right at the end of it. They're tired of the drop beneath their feet, Mamdani said."
City workers removed a slight roadway dip on the bike ramp from the Williamsburg Bridge onto Delancey Street, converting the hazardous drop into a smooth ramp. Mayor Zohran Mamdani and DOT officials oversaw the repair and completed the final asphalt pour on Jan. 6, 2026. The dip had forced cyclists to ride single-file between concrete barriers and created anxiety for riders exiting the bridge. An $18 million Delancey Street redesign, announced in 2023, already included elimination of the drop but remains over four years from completion. DOT characterized Tuesday's work as a quick fix ahead of the larger project.
