Mamdani Uses 'Sammy's Law' To Reduce Speed Limits To 15 MPH At Schools, But Broader Implementation Is Stalled - Streetsblog New York City
"Today is a significant step forward in us ensuring that we are extending this safety to far more school children across our city and that we will extend it to every single eligible school zone by the end of 2029. I will continue to hold firm to our vision of making our streetscape the envy of the world, and the way that we start doing that is by first catching up to the rest of the world."
"It is a goal of our administration to reduce the speed limit to 20 miles per hour on all city streets. But that is something that can only be done with a local law change, and we do support that. To change the citywide speed limit in one fell swoop requires a local administrative change to the city administrative code by the City Council, and that is a change that I would support."
Mayor Mamdani announced plans to reduce speed limits to 15 miles per hour in front of 800 additional public school buildings by year-end, bringing the citywide total to 1,300 school streets. By 2029, all 2,300 eligible school locations will have the reduced speed limit implemented. The mayor acknowledged advocates' desire for faster implementation and broader citywide speed reductions from 25 to 20 miles per hour. However, he explained that changing the citywide speed limit requires a local administrative code change through City Council approval. The mayor expressed support for this broader initiative and stated his vision of making the city's streetscape "the envy of the world" by first catching up to international safety standards.
