The city launched the first-ever Rental Ripoff Hearings to collect renter testimony about unsafe conditions, unexplained charges, and other common rental complaints. The hearings were created by an executive order signed on Jan. 4 and will be held in all five boroughs between late February and early April. Testimony can be given publicly or in one-on-one meetings with senior officials from HPD, the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, and the Department of Buildings. Officials say hearings will gather information, not impose penalties, and that collected testimony will inform a report and policy proposals to protect tenants.
