"Here in Maspeth, we gather as New Yorkers and as Americans to honor the lives taken from us so tragically on Sept. 11,"
"Twenty-four years later, the wounds of 9/11 are still felt. They endure the grief of families who lost loved ones, in the memories of first responders who showed unimaginable bravery and selflessness, and in the heart of a city and nation that will never forget. These first responders include the 19 heroes we lost from the Squad 288/HazMat 1 firehouse in the neighborhood, the most of any New York City firehouse, and I'm continuing my efforts to secure $2 million to upgrade the facility so that its firefighters can continue the crucial work they do."
"Today, we recommit ourselves to the solemn responsibility of remembrance, not only through words, but through action,"
"We must ensure that those impacted by the 9/11 attacks receive the resources, benefits, and justice they deserve."
Maspeth residents, community leaders, and elected officials gathered at Maspeth Memorial Park to mark the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. The ceremony remembered Maspeth residents, FDNY Squad 288 and Hazmat 1 firefighters, and those who have died from 9/11-related illnesses. U.S. Rep. Grace Meng emphasized ongoing grief, the bravery of first responders, and efforts to secure $2 million to upgrade the local firehouse. Council Member Robert Holden advocated landmark designation for the firehouse. Participants sounded a bell, read names, placed a wreath, offered prayers, and performed musical tributes to honor the fallen.
