New law strengthens, extends school zone speed camera program
Briefly

Governor Kathy Hochul has signed legislation extending New York City's school zone speed camera program through 2030, enhancing its capabilities to deter reckless driving. Originally enacted in 2013, the program aims to diminish traffic injuries and fatalities near schools. The updated law repeals outdated language, ensuring that speed cameras remain a vital tool for safety. Senator Andrew Gounardes emphasized the program's effectiveness, noting a remarkable 94% reduction in speeding violations where cameras are present, contributing to a 14% decrease in fatalities and injuries in those zones.
Legislation S.8344/A.8787 updates provisions first enacted in 2013 that authorized automated speed enforcement in school zones across New York City. The law extends the program and also repeals some outdated language, thus guaranteeing the continued use of speed cameras to prevent dangerous driving and reduce traffic injuries.
The bill's main sponsor, state Senator Andrew Gounardes said, "At this point, there are no questions, just facts: speeding kills, and speed cameras save lives. No New Yorker should fear for their life while traveling on our streets. The speed camera program works-where there are cameras, drivers slow down and speeding plummets."
