""The excruciating pain that I endured for over a decade was gone,""
""I was in remission. Psilocybin gave me my life back.""
""We're  interested in hearing the testimony to see what we can do about perhaps making it legal and appropriate for medical providers to to dispense a product that they, frankly, have been acknowledging is effective for their patients, but have been unable in New York to legally prescribe it,""
Joseph McKay, a retired New York City firefighter, suffered years of painful cluster headaches and post-traumatic stress disorder after responding to the 9/11 attacks. Conventional treatments failed until he tried psilocybin, after which his excruciating pain stopped and his condition went into remission. McKay testified before the state Assembly health committee as lawmakers consider allowing medical access to psilocybin, which could make New York the fourth state to do so. Lawmakers have introduced bills but none have reached a vote; supporters hope testimony will spur action in 2026. Researchers see promise for psilocybin in treating depression and other ailments but call for more study. Psilocybin remains illegal under federal law.
