"Then, about 7:45 a.m., a resident of one of the first-floor apartments opened the door and fired at the officer in the hallway "from close range with a shotgun," striking the officer on the left side of his face. The officer's injuries are consistent with bird shot pellets being fired from a shotgun, Tisch said. Waris returned fire and the resident, a man, barricaded himself in the apartment."
An NYPD officer, 25-year-old Sharjeel Waris, was struck in the face by shotgun fire while responding to a 911 call about a shooting in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and was released from the hospital. EMS responded before 6 a.m. to reports of an unconscious man at 1046 Thomas S. Boyland St.; the man, identified as 41-year-old Leroy Wallace, was pronounced dead and a shotgun shell casing was found in the building vestibule. Two 73rd Precinct officers secured the scene; about 7:45 a.m., a first-floor resident opened a door and fired at an officer, striking his left face with birdshot. Waris returned fire and the shooter barricaded inside. Two other officers sustained minor injuries in a vehicle crash.
