These NYC neighborhoods will get free child care for 2-year-olds first, Mamdani says
"Raising a child takes a village - and it takes a city government willing to step up and tackle the child care crisis head-on. Launching free 2-K in these four neighborhoods is just the beginning of our work to put money back in New Yorkers' pockets, strengthen our entire economy and help more families build their lives here."
"Raising a family in New York shouldn't feel like a luxury, and today we're taking another significant step to deliver universal child care."
Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced the first New York City neighborhoods selected for a free child care program for 2-year-olds, launching this fall regardless of family income or immigration status. The initial rollout covers parts of Upper Manhattan, the Bronx, Southeast Queens, and Central and Eastern Brooklyn, including specific school districts in Washington Heights, the Northwest Bronx, Canarsie, and Ozone Park. Governor Kathy Hochul committed $73 million for the first 2,000 slots and $425 million for the following year. Neighborhoods were selected based on economic need, projected child care demand, and provider capacity. The program will utilize both child care centers and home-based providers.
