Taylor Townsend beat Jelena Ostapenko 7-5, 6-1 in a second-round US Open match that ended with a heated confrontation on the Court 11 sideline. The players remained close after the postmatch handshake, and Ostapenko wagged a finger while criticizing Townsend. Townsend responded by saying competition provokes reactions and later encouraged the partisan crowd. Townsend used a jump rope during an Ostapenko locker-room delay earlier in the match. Townsend recently rose to No. 1 in WTA doubles and is No. 139 in singles, reaching a Grand Slam third round for the first time since 2023. Ostapenko has had prior on-court disputes.
