A 48-year-old Department of Transportation dump truck driver operating a 2017 Mack truck struck and killed 31-year-old Nilufar Komilova in Kew Gardens, Queens on March 10 at 4:54 p.m. The driver was traveling eastward on Metropolitan Avenue and hit the pedestrian while turning right onto southbound Lefferts Boulevard. Komilova suffered severe head and torso injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver remained at the scene and was not arrested. The NYPD Collision Investigation Squad is investigating the incident. DOT officials expressed condolences and noted that city vehicle crashes have decreased 20% since the Vision Zero initiative launched in 2017, attributing improvements to safety devices including speed limiters and surround cameras.
