""I was walking one day and watching the trash blow in the wind, and I just decided I'd had enough," Baum said. "I realized I could take this into my own hands. I didn't have to wait for the city to do it.""
""As easily as people put crap up here, I can take it down," she said. "So I started-and it just escalated from there.""
""This is an iconic landmark," she said. "It deserves better.""
The Brooklyn Bridge draws millions of visitors and features a pedestrian walkway lined with fences that have accumulated locks, hair ties, hygiene products and other debris. A Brooklyn Heights resident, Ellen Baum, removes that clutter on her own time to restore views and respect for the landmark. Baum began after seeing trash blow in the wind and deciding to act rather than wait for city agencies. Multiple 311 complaints produced no violations from the Department of Sanitation. Baum has attracted volunteers and invites anyone with bolt cutters to help remove locks she cannot cut with a serrated wine key.
