Why No BRT For NYC? Two New Reports Tackle Why Your Bus Service Sucks - Streetsblog New York City
Briefly

New York City buses maintained an average speed of 8.3 miles per hour from February 2015 to February 2025. Although various bus priority measures were introduced since 2008, they remain the slowest in the nation. Reports indicate that the failure to implement effective, comprehensive Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) strategies has led to disappointing results. Studies reveal that piecemeal improvements have not substantially increased bus speeds denoting the need for coordinated efforts that incorporate proven bus-first treatments for a noticeable impact.
"New York City's bus priority measures have never reached the baseline rating of a Bus Rapid Transit corridor," Weinstock and Hook wrote in their study, "How Much Faster Are We Moving?"
"There are at least 18 full BRT corridors in the US and dozens more internationally. These full BRT corridors have generally achieved much higher average speeds, ranging from 11 to 14 mph. Surely New York can do better."
