Eric Adams suspended his reelection bid amid outcry over a scandal-ridden mayorship and a 2024 federal indictment on charges of wire fraud, bribery and conspiracy tied to campaign fundraising. He initially planned an independent general election run after foregoing the Democratic primary but announced on Sept. 28 that he would not seek reelection following very low approval ratings. Adams created the Office of Faith-Based and Community Partnerships (OFBCP) in 2022 and appointed Gilford Monrose director. The OFBCP mobilized small and often overlooked congregations into city governance and provided faith leaders access to city resources and a seat at the table. Faith leaders worry those partnerships will falter under a new administration.
