President Trump's interest in reopening Alcatraz prison for the 'worst of the worst' contrasts with the nostalgic memories of residents like Jolene Babyak, who enjoyed a secure and vibrant community there. Living on the island during the 1950s and early 1960s, Babyak recalls her childhood filled with entertainment and breathtaking views, emphasizing the close bonds formed among families of the prison staff. The reality of life on Alcatraz was quite different from its legendary escape attempts and notorious inmates, painting a unique picture of this historic site.
"We had a very tight-knit community, plenty of entertainment, a low-crime neighborhood, and million dollar views!" she says.
Babyak resided there from 1954 to 1955 (from the age of 7 to 9) and again in 1962 when she was 15 years old.
