Taylor Sheridan originally intended for Yellowstone to have three more seasons, influenced by its immense popularity and viewership. However, conflicts with Kevin Costner over filming schedules and contract disputes forced an unexpected series finale earlier than planned. Following Costner's departure to pursue other projects, Paramount Network decided to conclude the flagship series while developing several spin-offs to expand its Yellowstone universe. Despite this shift, the series has laid the groundwork for future content to be available on Paramount+.
"Yellowstone ended about three seasons before Sheridan had hoped because of a conflict with Costner... Sheridan, Glasser and McCarthy are cooking up more prequels and spin-offs."
"I made a contract for seasons five, six and seven... They wanted to redo that one, and instead of seasons 6 and 7, it was 5A and 5B, and maybe we'll do six."
