Gage Ziehl was a fourth-round pick by the Yankees in the 2024 MLB Draft and began his professional career in 2025. He reached as high as Double-A before being traded to the White Sox for outfielder Austin Slater and moved to High-A Winston-Salem. Prior to the trade he made 15 starts across three levels, logging 82.1 innings with a 4.15 ERA and 1.24 WHIP and ranked No. 18 in the Yankees system. Ziehl allowed 17 hits and 10 earned runs in 9.1 innings across his first three starts with Chicago’s system, then rebounded with a five-inning outing, allowing one earned run on five hits and one walk while working 84 pitches. He credited bullpen conversations and small mechanical adjustments with pitching coach Blake Hickman for improved execution and comfort on the mound.

"Me and [pitching coach Blake Hickman] had a talk in the bullpen earlier this week about little mechanical things. I had kind of been pulling off everything, and today I think the execution and just the way everything went, hitting my locations, I think it definitely was a lot better than it has been," Ziehl told Jeff Cohen of FutureSox after the game.
