"The veteran southpaw was practically red-lining over the first three shutout innings of his Yankees postseason debut in Game 2 of the ALDS against the Kansas City Royals before falling apart in the fourth, when he allowed two runs on five hits, including a home run and a wild pitch. He would only record two outs in that frame before getting pulled."
"Pitching in some of the games last year, obviously, pitching in the World Series, it's hard to replicate that, especially during the regular season. Those games are important during the regular season, but the high of the energy is not quite like Game 2 of the World Series, or Game 1 of the ALCS, or any of those games in the postseason."
Carlos Rodon has struggled with emotional control in high-leverage postseason starts, often starting strong and then collapsing in later innings. In Game 2 of the ALDS against the Royals he dominated the first three innings but allowed two runs, including a homer and a wild pitch, and was pulled after recording only two outs in the fourth. He also lasted just 3.1 innings in his first World Series start, surrendering four runs and three homers. Rodon says he learned to save energy, has received help with his mental approach, and faces a major test in Game 2 of the Wild Card Series against Boston at Yankee Stadium.
