Camilo Doval was traded from the Giants to the Yankees just before the trade deadline and has struggled in New York. He has allowed runs in more than half of his nine appearances, including three straight outings with runs allowed. In one outing against Boston he committed a balk after exceeding MLB's maximum disengagements, which led to audible boos from the broadcast. His nine outings include a 7.36 ERA in 7.1 innings, with nine hits, seven walks, nine runs (six earned), eight strikeouts and two blown saves.
Doval entered in the sixth inning with the Yankees leading 3-2. He got a lineout on the first pitch of the inning but then wilted from there. He gave up an infield single and then sent that runner to second on a balk when he stepped off the mound after two pickoffs, going past MLB's maximum number of "disengagements" from the mound. Fox broadcaster John Smoltz was in the midst of discussing never having seen the third disengagement happen ... right before Doval made it happen.
With the run allowed Thursday, Doval has given up a run in more than half of his nine appearances with the Yankees, including in his past three pitching appearances and four of his past five. (He also allowed three runs in his Yankees debut, though none were earned because of a brutal error by an outfielder.) The overall numbers are pretty rough in the nine outings: a 7.36 ERA in 7.1 innings pitched, nine hits, seven walks, nine runs (six earned), eight strikeouts and two blown saves out of two save opportunities.
